If you're interested in neurology, music, and the human condition, I highly recommend the book Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain by neurologist Oliver Sacks. More than just a collection of striking cases - unusual amnesias, dementias and genetic disorders - Musicophilia illuminates the tragedy of pathology and the redemptive powers of music.

Sacks' approach to medical investigation is deeply compassionate, where the patient's experience of their dysfunction is as relevant as the underlying physical affliction. He recounts anectdotes which are at times tragic beyond comprehension, and at others inspirational beyond words. Musicophilia is an elegant neurological exploration of what it means to be human.

Also by Oliver Sacks, and highly recommended are The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, and The Mind's Eye.
